"Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” Matthew 19:24
How do you follow Jesus when you are comfortable and don't have needs? Following Jesus when life is comfortable and your needs are met can be both an opportunity and a challenge. Without immediate struggles pressing you to depend on God, it can be easy to drift into complacency. However, wealth in life offers a unique opportunity to live out discipleship in intentional and selfless ways. Here’s what it might look like:
1. Gratitude and Humility
Recognize that your comfort and resources are gifts from God. Cultivate a posture of gratitude rather than entitlement. Stay humble, remembering that your value and identity come from being loved by God, not from your circumstances or achievements.
2. Generosity and Service
Use your resources, time, and talents to serve others. Jesus called His followers to care for the poor, the lonely, and the oppressed. Look for ways to share your abundance with those in need, whether through financial giving, mentorship, or volunteering.
3. Pursuit of Holiness
In comfort, the temptation to rely on yourself or fall into worldly distractions can grow. Stay intentional about prayer, Scripture study, and obedience to God’s Word. Regularly examine your heart for areas where you might be placing your comfort above God’s will.
4. Living Missionally
Use your position of stability to advance the kingdom of God. Build relationships, share the gospel, and show Christ’s love in your community. Ask God how you can be a light in your workplace, social circles, and family, even if your life outwardly looks ordinary.
5. Radical Trust in God
Comfort can create a false sense of security. Actively place your trust in God rather than in your possessions, health, or circumstances. Be willing to step out of your comfort zone if God calls you to something risky or sacrificial.
6. Develop Spiritual Discipline
Commit to practices that keep your faith vibrant: fasting, solitude, worship, and fellowship with other believers. Use this season to grow deeper roots in your faith so that when trials come, you’re prepared.
7. Seeking God’s Will Daily
Ask God to show you how He wants you to steward your comfort and resources for His purposes. Pray for a heart that remains sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading, even when life feels easy.
Following Jesus when you are wealthy means living as a steward, not an owner, of your blessings. Continually ask, “How can I use my life and resources to glorify God and serve others?”
